Taishan 1 EPR: World Nuclear Association welcomes new reactor
Issued 30 June 2018
World Nuclear Association congratulates all involved with the Taishan 1 EPR nuclear power reactor project on the announcement that the reactor has been connected to the grid and is starting to deliver electricity (classed as an operable reactor).
Agneta Rising, Director General of World Nuclear Association said; "Taishan 1 is the latest nuclear power reactor to start supplying reliable and clean low carbon electricity. We congratulate the operators - CGN, EDF and Yuedian - and all those involved in the construction and commissioning of Taishan 1 on their achievement."
Taishan 1 started construction on 18 November 2009. It has a net capacity of 1660 MWe (Megawatts electric) and at full power will generate nearly 40,000 MWh of electricity each day.
Further EPRs are under construction at Taishan 2 (the sister plant of Taishan 1), Flamanville in France and Olkiluoto in Finland.
Agneta Rising added; "Taishan 1 is the fourth reactor to be grid connected this year. In 2018 and 2019 more than 30 reactors are due to start operations. This is a good start to meeting the nuclear industry's Harmony goal of 1000 new reactor start-ups by 2050, enabling nuclear energy to supply 25% of the world's electricity needs."
